The entire city seemed to be floating, but Hugo knew better. The wooden houses were built on platforms that rested on massive oak pillars that had been driven deep into the lake bed. The platforms and walkways were like small islands and were connected to each other by curved wooden bridges. The lake was shallow enough to allow the city to be built out of archers' reach, making it safe from incendiary arrows. Hugo stood on one of those wooden arched bridges and looked out over the lake.
