Preorder - The Pacific Book (240pA4 HB)
In 1942 and 1943 the war in the Pacific and in
Asia covered vast distances as Japanese ambitions
sought to bring much of these lands under their
control. In the British colonies of Malaya and
Burma, the Japanese swept British and Indian
forces towards the Indian frontier in what seemed
like an unstoppable tide.
In the Western Pacific Ocean, the Japanese seized
US possessions and dependencies, quickly over-
whelming garrisons, even taking the Philippines
from local and US troops. They even reached the
doorstep of Australia, taking control of the Dutch
East Indies and landing in Papua New Guinea and
prompting the Australians to bring their forces back
from the Mediterranean theatre and hastily dispatch
home defence troops to Papua New Guinea.
However, as the Allies recovered from these initial
setbacks they began the long and hard fought battle to
turn back the Japanese tide. The British and Indians
launch a number of offensives to recover Burma,
while the Americans and Australians fight together to
secure Papua New Guinea, while the Americans begin
the fight for the Solomon Islands at Guadalcanal.
